ASOP Workshop: Winning GOTV at the Door
Winning GOTV at the Door: How to Turn Supporters Out to Vote
Turn Every Door Knock Into Focused, Disciplined Voter Contact
What should a canvasser accomplish when speaking with a voter during the final phase of a campaign?
Get-out-the-vote canvassing has a different purpose from persuasion. Canvassers need to understand their assignment, ask clear questions, record useful information, and know when to refer questions about voting procedures to an official source.
Join Mateo T. Portelli, author of Democracy on Sale: The 7 Rules of Door-to-Door Political Canvassing — 2026 Field Edition, for this one-hour online workshop on preparing for and conducting door-to-door GOTV conversations. Portelli began his political career as a Nevada Republican Party field organizer and later served as Nevada State Director for the NRSC’s Operación ¡Vamos! He has personally knocked nearly 15,000 doors.
Using the seven-rule framework from his book, Portelli will cover preparation, professional conduct at the door, sound judgment, clear questions, and accurate recordkeeping.
Participants will examine how to discuss a voter’s participation plan, respond to difficult interactions, and close each conversation with a clear outcome.
The workshop will also address the need to use current, approved information when answering questions about polling locations, deadlines, identification requirements, and other voting procedures, which vary by jurisdiction.

Why It Matters
During GOTV, activity alone does not tell a campaign whether its field operation is accomplishing its objective. A canvasser can knock on dozens of doors and still produce little useful information if the assignment is unclear, conversations lack focus, or results are recorded inaccurately.
Preparation helps prevent those failures. Canvassers who understand whom they are contacting, why those voters were selected, what information the campaign needs, and what outcome they are seeking can approach each conversation with a clear purpose.
Judgment matters just as much. No script can anticipate every interaction. Effective canvassers must know how to communicate naturally with different people while maintaining message discipline, respecting voters who decline to engage, and leaving situations that become unsafe.
Accuracy is especially important when voting procedures enter the conversation. Election administration varies across states and local jurisdictions, and the U.S. Election Assistance Commission advises voters to verify current registration and voting information through state and local election sources.
A disciplined GOTV operation connects mission, preparation, communication, judgment, data collection, and follow-up. Winning GOTV at the Door gives campaign staff, organizers, and volunteers a practical framework for understanding those responsibilities and carrying out voter-contact assignments with greater clarity, consistency, and professionalism.
