Writing Governing Documents under Robert's Rules

Strong organizations depend on strong governing documents. Writing Governing Documents teaches leaders how to build the rules and structures that allow organizations to operate with clarity, accountability, and stability.

Participants will learn how to distinguish among charters, bylaws, special rules of order, standing rules, and custom; understand which rules take priority; and write bylaws that provide structure without unnecessarily limiting an organization’s ability to act. The training also addresses amendment procedures, subordinate organizations, chartering, and common provisions that create confusion or conflict.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Understand the hierarchy of organizational authority
  • Determine what belongs in bylaws—and what does not
  • Draft clear, workable bylaw provisions
  • Distinguish bylaws from special rules and standing rules
  • Write amendment procedures that protect stability while allowing change
  • Identify common drafting mistakes and problematic clauses
  • Develop rules for subordinate organizations and chartered bodies
  • Create governing documents that support effective leadership and long-term organizational health
