ABOUT | Robert's Rules of Order for Local Officials

This concise, practical course teaches city council members, county commissioners, mayors, and other local elected officials the key elements of Robert's Rules of Order needed to run fair, efficient, and legally sound public meetings.

Focus is on the most-used procedures in local government—without unnecessary complexity—so you can chair or participate confidently while meeting transparency and open-meeting requirements.

Core Topics:

  • Basic parliamentary principles and roles (chair, members, public)
  • Standard meeting structure and agenda flow
  • Making, seconding, amending, debating, and voting on motions (main motion, amend, previous question, postpone, refer, table)
  • Managing debate, time limits, points of order, appeals, and quorum
  • Common local-government issues: abstentions, conflicts, executive sessions, public comment, and disruptive situations
  • Quick-reference scripts and cheat sheets for real meetings

Outcomes:

Participants will:

  • Preside or participate with greater accuracy and poise
  • Avoid delays, confusion, and procedural mistakes
  • Protect member and public rights while moving business forward

Perfect for new officials, veterans needing a refresher, or entire boards seeking consistency.
