Engaging Local Government
ABOUT | LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
The Leadership Institute’s (LI) mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. The Institute identifies, recruits, trains, and places conservatives in government, politics, and the media.
ABOUT | Engaging Local Government
Local government makes decisions every week that shape your taxes, schools, zoning, housing, public safety, and basic freedoms — often with little public participation and even less oversight.
In this training, you’ll learn how ordinary citizens can effectively engage local and state government, understand how decisions are made, and hold public officials accountable — without needing to run for office, hire lawyers, or become a policy expert.
Our guest speaker is a longtime activist and policy advocate with experience working at the city, county, and state levels across transparency, zoning, housing, education, and civil liberties. She has testified before legislative committees, organized local accountability efforts, and trained citizens to navigate government systems that are often opaque and inaccessible.
This session is designed for activists, chapter leaders, students, and concerned citizens who want to move beyond commentary and learn how to participate effectively in real governance.
You’ll Learn how to:
- Identify your districts, elected officials, boards, and commissions
- Navigate municipal and state government websites efficiently
- Track meetings, hearings, and votes before decisions are finalized
- Understand the rules and procedures for public comment and testimony
- Prepare effective statements that influence outcomes
- Identify opportunities to serve on citizen boards and advisory bodies
- Bring attention to issues that are overlooked or deliberately avoided
You’ll also see practical examples of how local advocacy has influenced policy — and how these methods can be applied in your own community.

Why This Matters
Most policy is not made in Washington.
It is made in city councils, school boards, planning commissions, and county meetings that few citizens ever attend.
Accountability does not happen automatically. If you want limited government, you have to limit it yourself.
It happens when informed citizens show up, understand the rules, and engage consistently.
This training will give you the tools to do exactly that.
