The Leadership Institute’s (LI) mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. The Institute identifies, recruits, trains, and places conservatives in government, politics, and the media.

ABOUT | The Art of Public Speaking

Whether you are new to public speaking or have years of experience, this public speaking workshop will develop your speaking ability to confidently connect with audiences. Public speaking is a skill, and like any skill, you can learn the key principles of effective public speaking and improve through practice and feedback.

In this 3-hour interactive and fun workshop, faculty will teach you the core principles of effective public speaking: connecting with your audience, structuring your message for impact, growing in your delivery, and becoming authentically you. There will be teaching, individualized practice in front of the group, and tailored feedback.

Come ready to participate, and leave ready to leverage the power of your voice.

Accessibility Notice

This training is held in a building without elevator access. Attendees must be able to climb three flights of stairs to reach the training room. Please consider this requirement when registering. For questions about the venue, please contact us before the event.

Kim Hemsley

Public Speaking coach, Ewing School

Originally from the UK, Kim trained at a top London Drama School and went on to work as a professional actress for 10 years in plays and musicals. She also worked as a voiceover artist, and filmed a course she created for the camera.

Kim is a public speaking coach at the Ewing School. She works one-on-one with executives, senior leaders, policy wonks, economists, attorneys, and advocates to help them share their ideas with clarity, confidence, and authenticity. She also leads group workshops and trains on delivery, stage presence, audience connection, and messaging.

Previously, Kim led the communications training program at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. For 5 years, Kim coached leaders and scholars to deliver clear and compelling testimonies, media interviews, and presentations.

Kim specializes in presence, voice, and authenticity, dives deeply into your ‘why,’ works strategically on content and flow, and helps you connect meaningfully with your audience. Embedded in all of Kim’s work is crafted practice, feedback, and experimentation, the only way to really grow in your presentation skills!

Kim lives with her husband and three daughters in the DC area.
