Barrett Young -  Volunteer Faculty at the Leadership Institute

Barrett Young is the Director of Grassroots at Young Americans for Liberty, the fastest growing youth Liberty organization whose mission is to identify, educate, train, and mobilize the next generation of conservative activists to make Liberty Win.

In 2015, Barrett was named “The Next Great Communicator” by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation for making the case for principled restraint in foreign policy at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. This experience helped propel him to be named a Young Ambassador to the French Republic and the top speaker at the annual Lafayette Debates hosted by the French Embassy. During his time as an ambassador, Barrett trained French military officers how to effectively communicate strategic military decisions in English to their NATO counterparts, visited the French Senate, conducted a tour of French non-profits dedicated to the refugee crisis, taught French military personnel how to effectively make public addresses and engage in argument, and attended the graduation ceremony for high ranking French officers at École de guerre, the French equivalent of the U.S. Army War College.

Prior to taking on the role of Midwest Regional Director at YAL, Barrett was the DC Intern Coordinator for Denver Riggleman’s gubernatorial run, and later, personal aide to the general consultant on the campaign, Carlyle Gregory. With Carlyle Gregory Company, Barrett worked on 10 Virginia House of Delegates campaigns and two congressional campaigns, aiding in messaging and fundraising for each campaign.

In his time outside of YAL, Barrett serves as a field consultant for Liberty-minded campaigns, having mobilized over hundreds students to get off the couch and on the campaign trail. Barrett recently founded Upstarts LLC, a voter targeting and messaging firm specializing in downballot races. Between his YAL affiliated and personal projects, Barrett has designed over 100 pieces of campaign literature and been a part of over 150 campaign, independent expenditure, and advocacy programs across the country.

An alumnus of George Washington University, Barrett served as a chapter president for his Young Americans for Liberty chapter and as the debate chairman for GW College Republicans. Barrett is also a proud graduate of the Leadership Institute’s Youth Leadership School and the Charles Koch Institute’s Koch Internship Program.
