Capitol Hill Jobseekers Ready for Employment
December 3, 2010, Arlington, VA—The Leadership Institute hosted 147 people on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for Capitol Hill Staff Training School. Read on for a student's reflection and for information on an upcoming school geared for those looking to work on the Hill. LI Student Alex VanNess of Baltimore, Maryland said, “I really wanted to thank you, and all of the Leadership Institutes staff, for putting together the Capitol Hill Staff Training School. I learned a great deal of information, over the past few days, that I know will help me with my Capitol Hill job search.” “I have been searching for a job on the Hill, unsuccessfully, for well over a year now. I've gone on informational interview after interview, thinking that I was getting my name out there. But I still couldn't understand why I wasn't finding an open position. It's because of this school, that I understand how the lack of sufficient follow up, with the people I met with, was hindering my job search.” “You provide an invaluable service to the Hill job hunter. I will definitely utilize as many of the networking concepts, as I can, in my future job search. Thank you so much.” The Capitol Hill Staff Training School helps conservatives looking to work in Congress by bringing in great faculty to highlight students' personal strengths, interview skills, salary negotiation, annual budget process, and the legislative process in the House and in the Senate. Notable faculty included: • Paul Teller, Executive Director of the Republican Study Committee • Christopher N. Malagisi, Director of Political & New Media Training at the Leadership Institute • Jessica DeGraffenreid, Executive Director, America's Future Foundation • Sarah B. Smith, Corporate Relations Manager, Americans for Prosperity • Steve Sutton, Vice President of Development & Campus Programs at the Leadership Institute • Meghann Olshefski, Talent & Events Manger at The David All Group • Ed Corrigan, Executive Director of the Senate GOP Steering Committee Due to the demand of this school LI will be hosting a similar school February 2 and 3 for conservatives looking to work on the Hill. The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. Happy Hanukkah from LI
December 2, 2010, Arlington, VA—The lighting of the National Menorah took place last night outside the White House to kick off the beginning of the Hanukkah eight day holiday. The Leadership Institute wishes LI supporters, graduates and friends a very happy Festival of Lights. Last night many gathered outside the White House Ellipse to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah or Chanukah by the lighting the National Menorah. The Master of Ceremonies Rabbi Levi Shemtov was joined by his father Rabbi Abraham Shemtov, and Office of Management and Budget Director Jacob “Jack” Lew—the highest ranking Jewish member of the president's cabinet—in lighting the 30-foot National Menorah. Hanukkah's eight day celebration commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Second Temple in Jerusalem in 164 B.C. after its desecration by the Syrian-Greeks in the Maccabean Revolt. The word Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew and the holiday begins on the Hebrew calendar's 25th day of Kislev. To watch a History Channel informational video about this holiday, please click here. The first National Menorah lighting was in 1979 where President Jimmy Carter participated. The National Menorah is close to where the National Christmas Tree will be located after its national lighting ceremony December 9. We wish those celebrating Hanukkah a very happy holiday! The Leadership Institute is an educational foundation whose mission is to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative activists and leaders in the public policy process. To accomplish this, LI identifies, recruits, trains, and places conservatives in government, politics, and the media. The Oregonian describes FreedomWorks as "a tightly run and well-financed national group."In order to ensure their leadership in the fight for freedom, FreedomWorks' tactics continually evolve: in the 1980s the organization pioneered direct marketing techniques that engaged grassroots citizens in policy change. In the early 1990s, FreedomWorks was an innovator in the use of message development and paid advertising to drive policy outcomes. Over the past 10 years, the organization created a "boots on the ground" strategy that puts real people in front of political decision makers back home. Today, major investments in FreedomWorks' online capabilities are building an active online community that will rival the likes of MoveOn.org. >

UVA Student Overcomes Great Odds With Help from LI
December 1, 2010, Arlington, VA—University of Virginia student Wes Siler with the help of the Leadership Institute received university funding for their conservative student group after being denied funding from the students' association and the university president.Wes Siler and his UVA friends began the Burke Society to promote conservatism on campus. Their “mission is to host speakers and organize events to further conservative values and thought on grounds.” Their efforts to become a university funded and recognized student organization was denied by the “liberal student association” and the university president.FIRE, an organization devoted to defending individual rights in higher education, worked with LI in drafting a letter to the UVA president. Within ten minutes of receiving this letter, the university president called the student council president instructing him to allocate money to the Burke Society and give them the right to associate. A Time of Thanks & Reflection

A Time of Thanks & Reflection
November 24, 2010, Arlington, VA--This Thanksgiving we stop working to reflect and give thanks with family and friends for the blessings of the past year. Read on for a Thanksgiving history lesson and a Leadership Institute reflection. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs' project America.gov stated in an article, "Thanksgiving is popularly traced to a 1621 feast shared by the English Pilgrims who founded the Plymouth Colony (located in present-day Massachusetts) and members of the Wampanoag Indian tribe." The America.gov article continues by stating, "The Pilgrims had arrived in 1620, crossing the Atlantic Ocean to separate themselves from the official Church of England and practice freely their particular form of Puritanism. Arriving at Plymouth Colony too late to grow many crops, and lacking fresh food, the Pilgrims suffered terribly during the winter of 1620-1621. Half the colony died from disease. The following spring, local Wampanoag Indians taught the colonists how to grow corn (maize) and other local crops, and also helped the newcomers master hunting and fishing. The Wampanoag were a people with a sophisticated society who had occupied the region for thousands of years, says the National Museum of the American Indian. Because they harvested bountiful crops of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins the Pilgrims had much to be thankful for in the fall of 1621." "The legacy of giving thanks, particularly with a shared feast, has survived the centuries. Several U.S. presidents -- starting with George Washington in 1789 -- issued Thanksgiving proclamations, but it wasn't until President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation that Thanksgiving became an annual national holiday. He called for it to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November." "A 1941 congressional resolution moved it to the fourth Thursday to assure a longer post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas shopping season in years when there are five Thursdays in November," the America.gov article said. And now, we give thanks. We thank all the folks that are volunteering this holiday in serving a meal to another--a friend, a homeless individual, a widow. We thank all those in uniform that are away from family and friends this Thanksgiving sacrificing for our liberty and freedom. We thank LI donors, supporters, and friends for making the mission of training conservative leaders possible. We thank our fellow conservative organizations that share similar passions and the vision LI so ardently pursues. We thank LI volunteer faculty for bringing their professional experiences to our schools and in training new conservative leaders. We thank those that ran for office this election cycle and their staff that poured themselves into the campaigns, seeing to it that conservative causes are represented at the university, local, city, state, and national levels. Take time to pause, reflect and give thanks with loved ones this holiday season. We at LI wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving! "Conservatives have been reenergized by the grassroots tea party activists and together are changing the direction of the country in this election." "We're 'ruling out' the ruling class in 2010," said Mr. Viguerie.
